In 2023, the number of electric and hybrid cars registered in the Republic of Moldova is approximately 50% higher than in 2022.
The share of energy-efficient transportation in the Republic of Moldova has been showing a growing trend over the past 6 years. According to data processed by the National Center for Sustainable Energy based on information provided by the Public Services Agency, between 2018 and 2023, over 36,000 electric and hybrid cars were registered in the Republic of Moldova.
Although the proportion of electric and hybrid vehicles among the total number of cars registered in the Republic of Moldova is relatively small, around 4%, there is a positive national trend towards recognizing the importance of reducing energy consumption in transportation. This is evidenced by the increasing number of electric and hybrid vehicles registered by both individuals and legal entities, excluding public electric transportation.
Based on the technology used, out of the 1,998 cars registered in the last 5 years, 1,998 are electric and 33,151 are hybrid. Out of the total of 3,138 electric cars, 2,336 are owned by individuals, and 802 by legal entities, with the number being three times higher for individuals. As for hybrid cars, 29,475 are owned by individuals, and 3,676 by legal entities, about 8 times more for individuals, indicating the increasing popularity of hybrid technology.
One of the objectives of the National Center for Sustainable Energy is to encourage traffic participants to opt for "green" transportation means, which have low CO2 emissions, such as electric or hybrid vehicles, and are energy-efficient, with reduced fuel consumption.
